Hair Transplant Surgery is a technique that involves transplanting live hair roots onto the bald or balding parts. Live hair roots are taken from the donor area of the same patient, usually from back and sides of scalp. Few other donor areas are considered if need be. It is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness, also used to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, and beard hair, and to fill in scars caused by accidents and surgery such as facelifts and previous hair transplants.

Follicular Unit Transplantation [FUT] is a method of choice at our centre. Under Local anesthesia strip of donor skin is harvested. The wound is then sutured back together to leave a linear scar. Donor strip [of scalp tissue] is then cut in to small pieces of tissue called GRAFTS which are then transplanted back in to the thinning area of the patients head. Grafts may contain 1-2-3-4 hairs [follicular units]

50-60 grafts can be placed per square centimeter area on the recipient site. Attention to the angle and orientation of the transplanted grafts gives natural look and provide better coverage to the bald areas.

It is important to note that cause of hail loss or hair weakness varies in the individuals. Investigating the underlying cause and medical treatment to strengthen the hairs and hair roots is very important. To this effect medical treatment is advised along with the dietary suggestions - foods to be avoided & foods to be added. This plan helps us to provide better cosmetic results by improving quality of hairs.

THE PROCEDURE
At an initial consultation, the patient's scalp is analyzed. His / Her preferences and expectations are discussed. He / She is told about the best approach (e.g. single vs. multiple sessions) and what results might reasonably be expected.

For several days prior to surgery the patient is advised to refrains from smoking, using any medicines such as ASPIRIN, or alcohol, which might result in intraoperative bleeding and resultant poor "take" of the grafts. Pre-operative antibiotics are commonly prescribed to prevent wound or graft infections.

COST
For patients who come for consultation, cost is told after the assessment session is over. Our preference is to tell best lump sum. If other cosmetic surgery procedures are also required, quite good concessional deal is worked out.

For patients who cannot come for initial consultation, sends email to us. They are required to send pictures of the bald areas and remaining hair bearing areas. Medical history performa is also required to be filled in detail. Total cost involved is worked out and intimated.

SURGERY
Hair transplantation [FUT] is done on an outpatient basis. The scalp is shampooed and then treated with an antibacterial solution prior to the donor scalp being harvested. Under local anesthesia [with mild sedation-optional] strip of skin from the posterior scalp, in an area of good hair growth is harvested. The excised strip is about 0.5 - 1.0 inch x 5-11 inches in size. While closing the resulting wound [Trichophytic closure - thin linear finer scar], assistants begin to dissect individual follicular unit grafts from the strip, carefully remove excess fibrous and fatty tissue while preserving the follicular cells that will be used for grafting.

Under local anesthesia the hair grafts are transplanted carefully, keeping attention to the angle and orientation of the transplanted grafts. This gives natural look and provide better coverage to the bald areas.
